Pregnancy and New Parenting
Title IX of the Higher Education Act of 1972 protects students, employees, and applicants for admission or employment from discrimination based on pregnancy or related conditions, and from sex based different treatment related to parental, family, or marital status.
Discrimination based on pregnancy or related conditions, parental status, and marital status violates the Policy Against Harassment and Discrimination.
ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ is committed to creating and maintaining an equitable and inclusive environment for students and employees who are experiencing pregnancy or related conditions. You can find the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Pregnancy and Parenting Policy here.
A student who is pregnant may:
- Continue to participate in classes and activities.
- Receive reasonable accommodations due to a pregnancy to ensure continued participation in classes and activities.
- Be excused from class due to pregnancy or childbirth for as long as the student's doctor says is necessary.
- After being absent, return to the same academic status they held beforehand, with the opportunity to make up any work missed while away.
ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ must:
- Allow a student to submit work after a deadline missed because of pregnancy or childbirth. If grading is based in part on class participation or attendance and a student missed class because of pregnancy or childbirth, the student should be allowed to make up the participation or attendance credits.
- Provide pregnant students with the same reasonable accommodations provided to students with temporary medical conditions.
The Title IX Coordinator & Director of Student Civil Rights Compliance can coordinate specific actions to prevent sex discrimination and ensure a pregnant or newly-parenting student’s equal access to the University's educational program and activities. ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for pregnant and newly parenting employees, too. These laws include the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), the Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers Act (PUMP Act), and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX).
