Hany Zayed is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the Department of Cultural and Social Sciences at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ. He earned his MA and PhD in Sociology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2023 and served as a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Global Studies at UIUC through 2025. Dr. Zayed also holds degrees in politics, economics and philosophy, as well as in finance and innovation management.

Dr. Zayed’s research lies at the intersection of education, technology and society, with a particular focus on the Middle East and Africa. Grounded in digital and ethnographic methods, his work examines the digital sociology of education, the political economy of educational technologies, digital social research methods, digital developmentalism, social movements and collective action, and global and transnational sociology. His research has been published in The British Journal of Sociology of Education; Learning, Media and Technology; Theory, Culture and Society; and The Journal of Digital Social Research. Dr. Zayed’s forthcoming book, entitled Digital Paradoxes, examines the contradictions between the utopian promises and messy realities of Egypt’s educational digitalization.
