‘Dead Man Walking’ author to go ‘On the Issues,’ April 17
April 15, 2025
MILWAUKEE — Sister Helen Prejean, award-winning author and advocate for the abolition of the death penalty in the United States, will be the featured guest for an “On the Issues” conversation with Derek Mosley, director of the Law School’s Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education, to be held at Ӱ Law School’s Eckstein Hall at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 17.
Registration for this event is full. Members of the media who are interested in attending must contact Kevin Conway, associate director of university communication, at kevin.m.conway@marquette.edu, in advance.
In this program, Sister Prejean will discuss her ministry, working against the death penalty, counseling individual death row prisoners, and working with murder victims’ family members. It has been 32 years since her book, now known as “Dead Man Walking: The Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States That Sparked a National Debate,” was published. Sister Prejean's book was made into an Oscar-winning movie and, most recently, an opera. She continues to educate the public, advocate for ending the death penalty, and counsel both prisoners’ and victims’ families.
Mosley has served as Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education director since 2023. Under his leadership, the Law School’s Lubar Center has expanded its programming to include sessions during Black History Month and on unconscious bias, as well as Heritage Dinners in the community, offering participants and attendees an engaging perspective on a variety of issues grounded in current events. A 1995 graduate of Ӱ Law School, Mosley for seven years represented the state of Wisconsin in court as an assistant district attorney in Milwaukee County and then served as a judge of the Milwaukee Municipal Court for 20 years.
Through public programming such as the Ӱ Law School Poll, “On the Issues” conversations with newsmakers, public lectures by leading scholars, conferences on issues of public significance, and the work of its Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education, Ӱ Law School seeks to advance civil discourse about law and public policy matters.
